We offer two types of IUD. Which suits you best is something we discuss together at the appointment.
Copper IUD Copper-T
- Hormone-free, works purely mechanically
- Effective for 5–10 years
- Suitable if you don't want hormones
- May make periods slightly heavier
Hormonal IUD Mirena
- Releases a small amount of progestogen locally
- Effective for 5 years
- Periods often become lighter or stop altogether
- Suitable for heavy or painful periods
Bring your own IUD
We do not supply IUDs. You buy it yourself on prescription at the pharmacy and bring it to the appointment. Not sure which type you want? No problem: we discuss that first, and then schedule the insertion once you have the IUD.

Consultation, separate or combined
We discuss your wishes, health, and which type of IUD suits you best. Already decided and have the IUD with you? Then we combine consultation and insertion in one appointment. Want to think first? Then we schedule the insertion afterwards.
Insertion
We take our time for your appointment, allow about an hour. The insertion itself takes a few minutes. You may feel mild discomfort or cramps, this is normal and passes quickly.
Contact us if you experience persistent symptoms:
- Persistent or severe pain
- Fever or feeling ill
- Unusual discharge or odour
- Heavy or prolonged bleeding
- Strings no longer palpable
- Suspected change in position
Control ultrasound included
One control ultrasound is included with the insertion. This lets us confirm together that the IUD is correctly placed, at no extra cost.
Removal
Want to get pregnant or have the IUD removed for another reason? That is always possible and straightforward.
When is an IUD less suitable?
An IUD is not the best choice in all situations. We advise against it in the case of (possible) pregnancy, a sexually transmitted infection, unexplained bleeding or lower abdominal pain, an abnormally shaped uterus, a previously expelled IUD, or hormone-dependent tumours. We always discuss this with you so we can find the best option together.
Frequently asked questions
Which IUD suits me: copper or hormonal?
That depends on your body and your wishes. A copper IUD is hormone-free and suits you if you prefer no hormones; your period keeps coming and may be a little heavier at first. A hormonal IUD releases a small amount of hormone, usually makes your period lighter or sometimes stops it altogether, and is helpful if you struggle with heavy or painful periods. How painful is having an IUD placed?
Most women feel a brief, cramping pain during insertion, similar to a strong period cramp; it usually lasts only a few minutes. Afterward you may have some lingering ache or mild cramps, which an ordinary painkiller relieves well. At Mirasoon we take our time, explain every step, and make sure you are as relaxed as possible, because tension makes it more uncomfortable than it needs to be.
How long am I protected with an IUD, and what if I want to get pregnant?
A copper IUD protects for 5 to 10 years depending on the type, and a hormonal IUD for 3 to 8 years. In the meantime you do not have to think about it. If you want to get pregnant, we simply remove the IUD; your fertility returns immediately, with no waiting period. Many women conceive within the first few months after removal. So you decide yourself when you are open to a pregnancy again.
Is having an IUD placed covered in Curaçao?
Generally not. Local insurers, including SVB, Ennia and Guardian, usually do not cover IUD placement. If you have international, expat, or defence insurance, it is sometimes covered; you then submit the invoice to your insurer yourself. We give you a clear overview of the costs in XCG beforehand, including the IUD itself and the placement, and by arrangement you can also pay in instalments.
